MY Urban Piano Trier - creative sound: music and participation in the heart of the city

MY Urban Piano Trier transforms the city centre into an open stage and invites everyone to help shape the city musically. Artistically designed pianos - freshly tuned and ready to play - will be set up in freely accessible locations throughout the city centre, inviting passers-by to pause, play along or simply listen. Whether professional or amateur, young or old: music becomes a unifying element in public spaces.

The concept stands for Active citizen participation - both musically as well as visually. The instruments are lovingly painted and customised by local artists, non-profit institutions and creative minds. This results in unique, resonant works of art that enrich the urban space and enable creative identification with one's own neighbourhood.

The project continues to grow organically every year: up to five new pianos are added to the collection, all fully functional and with a history. They are purchased by the co-operation partner Piano house Marcus Hübner as Donations in kind including regular tuning. MY Urban Piano thus combines sustainability, cultural education and urban quality of life in a particularly charming way.

In the context of a creative and lively city centre development the project provides low-threshold impulses for participation, encounters and spontaneous cultural experiences. Music becomes audible - in the centre of the city, for everyone, at any time.

My Urban Piano returns to Trier in September 2025.

For the fifth time in a row, "My Urban Piano Trier" will transform the city of Trier into a colourful musical stage from 13.09. to 22.09.2024.

The concept is simply ingenious: artistically designed pianos - freshly tuned and ready to play - are placed freely accessible throughout the city and invite everyone to play.

"My Urban Piano Trier" stands for active civic participation - both musically and visually. The pianos are lovingly painted and designed by local artists, non-profit organisations and creative minds. Both professional artists and amateurs have the opportunity to present their sounding works of art in prominent city centre locations. Every year, up to five new pianos are added to the existing stock. These fully functional, used instruments are donated to us in kind by our co-initiator and co-operation partner "Pianohaus Marcus Hübner". Pianohaus Marcus Hübner also takes care of tuning the instruments. In this way, new, unique sounding works of art are created every year.

In 2024, we want to think beyond borders with our partners from "AG Kultur der Großregion" and "Trifolion Echternach"! Against the picturesque backdrop of the Domfreihof, we will be presenting artists from different countries in the Greater Region on several concert evenings. Each evening is dedicated to a different region and showcases musical diversity. At a producing session, artists from the Greater Region come together to sample and present a song. Another special highlight is the collaborative Urban Piano, which is created together with artists and guests on each concert evening. At the end of the concert series, we will have created a unique Greater Region piano.

Our aim is to create low-threshold and consumption-free meeting spaces. For this reason, admission to our events is voluntary. Guests may also bring their own drinks. The voluntary entrance fee (recommended: €15) is paid on site.
