FUTURA C – Workshops in Düsseldorf and Strasbourg

Eine Gruppe junger Menschen sitzen um einen Tisch
FUTURA C Workshops
2 and 7 October 2026 • all day
Freiburg, „Zeitraum“ & Reims, „La Cartonnerie“

A two-part workshop on sustainability and inclusion

Participants in FUTURA C always take part in two workshops, which are designed as a coherent learning journey spanning borders and topics. Each participant attends one workshop in France and one in Germany to promote international exchange and cooperation. At the same time, the two workshops complement each other thematically: one focuses on Sustainability, the other on Inclusion. This structure ensures that participants gain a holistic understanding of how to organise cultural events that are both environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive – whilst at the same time forging strong cross-border links with other professionals.

Workshop 1/2
9 November 2026
Düsseldorf (Germany) @ CHANCE Festival

About the workshop

Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important issue for cultural organisations, yet many teams do not know where to start. Given limited resources, day-to-day operations and growing expectations from funders, audiences and society, it can seem difficult to find a path towards sustainable transformation.

This interactive workshop offers a practical introduction to the topic of sustainability in the cultural sector. Participants will explore how sustainability can be integrated into organisational structures, programmes and decision-making processes without losing sight of the sector’s artistic and social mission.

Through a combination of presentations, reflection and group exercises, participants learn how to identify key stakeholders, formulate shared goals, assess their current situation and develop realistic measures for change. The workshop focuses on providing inspiration and supporting organisations in finding their own path towards more sustainable and inclusive practices.

Participants will take away practical tools, new perspectives and actionable ideas that they can apply straight away within their own organisations and projects.

Workshop leaders: Jochen Leuf

Jochen Leuf is a cultural manager, musician and sustainability expert with more than twenty years’ experience in the development of cultural projects and organisations.

As co-founder and artistic director of Kulturkarawane, he has launched numerous participatory cultural initiatives that transform public spaces into places of encounter, creativity and dialogue. His work combines artistic vision with strategic management and a strong commitment to accessibility, inclusion and sustainability.

Before turning his attention to cultural management, Jochen worked internationally as a certified tour guide and cultural facilitator, designing and leading trips that brought people into contact with local cultures and communities. These experiences continue to shape his approach to this day: meaningful cultural work begins with listening, participation and the creation of spaces where different perspectives can come together.

As a certified transformation manager for sustainable culture (IHK), Jochen helps organisations to integrate environmental, social and economic sustainability into their day-to-day operations. His workshops combine practical methods with experience from the cultural sector, thereby helping participants to turn ambitious goals into actionable measures.

About the organisation

Kulturkarawane is a non-profit cultural organisation based in Trier. Since 2014, it has been developing cultural projects that bring people together and create accessible spaces for participation in public life.

Based on the principle that culture is a human right, Kulturkarawane designs and delivers music-based cultural programmes, urban regeneration initiatives and community-focused events that bring together diverse audiences and strengthen social cohesion. The organisation works with local authorities, cultural institutions, artists and civil society organisations to revitalise public spaces and make culture visible beyond traditional venues.

Sustainability, inclusion and participation are at the heart of its work. Through local, national and European projects, Kulturkarawane explores how cultural organisations can contribute to more resilient, democratic and better-connected communities, whilst ensuring that cultural activities remain accessible to all.

Workshop 2/2

Strasbourg (France)
@ Kaleidoscoop

About the workshop

Did you know that cultural rights are just as important as the right to food, housing, work or social security?

Although cultural rights are an integral part of fundamental human rights, they are still not recognised, respected and/or implemented everywhere.

However, taking these factors into account is essential to upholding human dignity and promoting the abilities and capacity for action of every individual. This is an ethical and democratic necessity that fosters inclusion and social cohesion.

On the agenda:

Context and international legal framework of cultural rights

Exploring the eight cultural rights and their implications in theory and practice using active learning methods

Identification and analysis of workplace situations in relation to the framework for cultural rights

Workshop leaders: Cécile Haeffele

After 15 years’ experience in the arts and culture sector, during which she worked with both charitable organisations and institutions in France and Canada, Cécile Haeffele set up a cultural consultancy to explore how artistic initiatives can foster new forms of collaboration between civil society actors – including artists, businesses, local residents and local authorities – and promote their individual and collective development.

She has been leading the TOT OU T’ART network since April 2020.

About the organisation

Founded in 2001, the „Tôt ou t’art“ Association“ coordinates a network of organisations working in the social, health, justice and cultural sectors in Alsace, with the aim of making cultural and artistic activities a driving force for social inclusion and cohesion. With 150 artists and cultural practitioners, around 460 social and medico-social organisations, and nearly a dozen local authorities supporting almost 70,000 people in precarious living situations, this „Cultures & Solidarity“ resource centre provides tools for communication, ticket sales, training and support.

Throughout the year, the association organises important events (forums, conferences, seminars) to promote mutual understanding and provide further training for professionals working in the social and cultural sectors.

We are all cultural beings! Tôt ou t’art supports its members in recognising people’s cultural resources, so as to enable them to access food, healthcare, employment and much more. We work with stakeholders in the cultural sector to strengthen the participation of people in precarious living situations in cultural life and to ensure that cultural organisations reflect the diversity of society.

WHAT IS FUTURA C?

Futura C is a project that brings together artists from France, Germany and other countries. It enables the cultural sector to rethink the way in which events are conceived, designed and produced.

Futura C equips cultural practitioners with the necessary skills and confidence to develop event formats that environmentally responsible, socially just and creatively bold are. Through a series of international workshops and a practical digital toolkit, participants discover practical strategies drawn from the EU GreenComp Framework as well as the EU principles of equality, diversity and non-discrimination.

Rooted in the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), Futura C supports professional development that makes a real difference: participants learn skills they can put into practice straight away, whilst at the same time helping to shape a more sustainable cultural landscape in the long term.

Our workshops are designed in such a way that for everyone involved in shaping the culture and events sector – whether behind the scenes, at the planning table or in the coordination office. This includes: festival and event organisers, cultural managers and producers, production teams and technicians, cultural educators, and teams from cultural institutions, associations and NGOs.

Each workshop is practical, collaborative and designed to develop new ideas that participants can put into practice straight away in their day-to-day work.

Futura C is co-funded by the European Union as part of the Erasmus+ programme, as well as by the Upper Rhine Conference and the Franco-German Citizens’ Fund.
